In the beginning, this was a small project started by a small group of researchers working in international contexts. We were facing some big challenges and decided to reach out to the global research community to learn from others.
We began a project called ‘Doing Ethical Research Together’ – we invited some researchers to meet with us in Edinburgh to help us think about how to find solutions to ethical challenges. Interest grew over the next months until more than 200 researchers, practitioners and other stakeholders from around the world had joined our discussions through a series of roundtable events at the University of Edinburgh and feedback events in 16 countries.

Context is key in global research. What may work in one place may not work in another. We were keen to include perspectives from different communities around the globe to make sure that this toolkit would represent many voices, experiences and many contexts.

We are hugely grateful for the time investment and thoughtful contributions of this network of people.
Contributors have shared that being involved in the development of this resource has been empowering and helpful to their practice.
Now I know that I am not alone. It is reassuring and liberating to know that others have had the same experiences. It is empowering to hear their solutions and to talk about mine. Now I know that there is not one right answer, but there is a strong process that will help me find the best answer for my project, for now.

We want to thank everyone who contributed to the development of this material.
It is the product of rich and intensive conversations with more than 200 researchers and people involved in global research, from more than 30 countries and more than 60 discipline areas, who attended our roundtable events at The University of Edinburgh in 2019 and workshops around the world. These conversations both inspired and shaped the development of this resource.
